The Big Haul: A Look at My First Amazon FBA Purchases
This week I started out the 5 in 5 challenge by jumping into Amazon FBA. I hit the shops on Sunday. Well, I went to WalMart XD
I was not feeling particularly optimistic. I hate going shopping as is and I especially hate going into WalMart. The atmosphere is just so depressing.
Because of my lack of shopping experience I had no idea where to go or how to find deals when in the store which didn’t make things easy. Combine that with how awkward it feels to be sitting around scanning things in a store…I just felt out of place.
All was not lost though. Eventually I figured out that there were these bright yellow balloons that said clearance and I was off to the races!
Scan Scan Scan
More like a marathon. It seemed like everything on clearance at WalMart was already on sale for cheaper on Amazon. Either that or the margins were not worth carrying it away from the shelf.
I jumped from clearance balloon to clearance balloon with no success until…
That’s gotta be worth something right? Seems pretty nice.
Alright, $4.66! That’s almost a 100% margin. That’s not going to include packaging and shipping though so it’s good to have room for error (shooting for at least 50%). I also haven’t included any taxes.
There were three knives total but the packaging was damaged on one so only able to grab two. Of course, someone snatched my cart when I wasn’t looking so now I’ve got to carry them. This place is ruthless.
The Clearance Aisle
After walking around hopelessly scanning things I started wondering up and down aisles and what do I stumble upon, the Clearance Aisle!
It was like heaven. A whole aisle dedicated to marked down junk that I could sell online.
Never before had I seen something that so clearly depicted The American Dream.
With so many things marked down and no one else occupying the aisle I was pretty free to go about my way scanning everything in sight. First I tried the electronics but those were a bust. Then I explored some of the toys but couldn’t find anything there either. Finally, I hit my next score.
The scanner said it was listed for $78.95 but what’s up with the missing info?
I may have been a little overzealous with this one but I grabbed it. I’ll have to figure out what that means later.
There is another big worry on this, it’s a team item. Meaning it has a much smaller buyer base than any other random thing.
I guess we’ll see what happens when I try to list it and go from there. If anything, I still have a quest to sell something on Craigslist so I can just recall it and post it on there if it doesn’t look like it will sell. There should be plenty of red Sox fans around here.
We’ll chock this one up to a learning experience.
UPDATE: After going through the process of learning how to list this I realized that this was a restricted item. Guess I’m learning a lot today…
The Big Score
The scanning continued until I hit what could only have been too good to be true.
It was the score. What I had been working for this whole time. And wait, is that 5 of them!
This must be what everyone was talking about, what gets you hooked. I picked up all 5 of them.
The Big Fail
After purchasing the items and getting home I was about to begin learning about all the terrible mistakes I had made.
The Kawaii Crush goodness I had fallen in love with at the store was to good to be true.
I had scanned the PB & J Slumber Party in store showed be a sales rank of about 44k, which is just inside the top 1%. Unfortunately for me, when I brought all this stuff home and scanned it again it was around 114k. That’s not quite as good, and the Day & Night was even worse at around 212k. Combine that with the restricted Baseball lamp and all I got left are two box cutters :'(
Lets just hope these sell by Christmas and the margins make it worth it.
Either way this has been a lot of fun and even though the learning process is getting expensive it’s still cheaper than getting a masters. The important part is that I had started and now I can move onto online arbitrage as well as the other things I got going on in the 5 in 5 challenge.
Now I just got to figure out how to ship this stuff…
